Bra Dilemmas

A reported 80% of British women wear the wrong sized bra and an ill-fitting bra can be incredibly uncomfortable. At House of Fraser we think it’s really important that every woman finds a perfect fitting bra. This handy page will help you find that all important fit.

 Buying a bra

When you buy a new bra, there are a few pointers to bear in mind, so you can achieve your dream fit:
  • Bras will change in shape and size from brand to brand.
  • Different fabrics may affect the fit, for example some women may find lace detailing restrictive.
  • Different types of bras suit different body shapes

Top tip
A new bra should fit perfectly when using the first hooks, as the bra is worn and stretches over time, you can then adjust accordingly.

 Don’t forget
If you’re exercising you MUST wear a sports bra which fits you and is suitable for your chosen activity.

Looking after your bra

  • Handwash underwired bras in lukewarm water
  • Wash light and dark colours separately
  • Never tumble dry underwired or delicate bras
  • Fold bras neatly away to prevent damage to the underwire
  • Avoid folding moulded cups over each other, instead lay flat

Choosing the Most Flattering Lingerie for Your Shape

Have you ever felt intimidated by the models you see on magazine covers?

Have you ever thought that being drop-dead sexy was absolutely impossible for you? Or, have you had the bad luck to purchase the wrong kind of lingerie, and then felt out of place and uncomfortable wearing it? Don't worry - there's good news: while all of these things have happened to most women at least once, there is a great way to overcome any of these problems.

How? It's all about the body type! By first identifying your body type, you can then focus on accentuating your best "assets" (and minimizing the ones that aren't so hot) - and find the perfect piece of lingerie for you. Intimate Wholesalers carries high quality lingerie for women of every size and body shape, so with this simple guide - and a little time shopping - you will discover the best styles for your own body!

First things first: take a look at yourself in a full-length mirror, with as little clothing on as possible. Stand up straight, and - without being too critical - determine where your body shape falls within these four main body type categories. Remember - no matter what your weight, you will fall into one of these categories:
  • Apple Shape or V frame - like an apple, you tend to be broader at the top (bust and shoulders) than the rest of your torso.
  • Pear Shape or "Spoon" - if you're this type, your torso tends to be fuller on the bottom (i.e. you've got it going on in the trunk!)
  • Rectangular - this body type is pretty much straight up and down from the shoulders to the hips.
  • Hourglass - so maybe you're among the rare percentage of women who are blessed with this one - equally curvy on top and bottom, with a narrower, well-defined waist.
Once you've made your determination, you're ready to start shopping! Below are our style guides for each of these body types to help you get started

Choosing Flattering Lingerie by Body Type

Whether you want a form-fitting corset or bustier, a teddy, or a simple baby doll, you can find the look that flatters you best by following just a few simple rules.

Pear Shaped

Bustiers, corsets, corset dresses If you are pear shaped, then you probably want to balance out your bottom half by maximizing your bust and accentuating your waist. Choose bustiers and push-up bras, and be sure to give yourself more balance by adding a corset or corselet to help minimize your waistline. A long line corset or corset dress can help you to blend the line from hip to waist and give you a smoother look.

Tight-fitting pants Pear-shaped women tend to lean towards clothing that enhance their topline and minimize their lower halves... but that can get boring! Have a little more fun by playing up that bottom half with a pair of figure hugging sexy pants, along with a top that accentuates the bust line for a purely irresistible look!

Rectangle Shaped

Boned corsets, waist cinchers, push-up bras Women with very straight lines can try cinching their waists for a more curvy look, and play up both their busts and shoulders, as well as their legs. A corset can help create a lovely curve beneath any style, and a padded push up bra can give you a lot more volume where you want it most.

Chemises You can wear any dress or top you like, so long as you use the right foundation wear beneath it! Tight-fitting chemises with padded tops work great with this body type. Vintage look lingerie sets Vintage styles tend to look amazing on straight figures, so look for a lingerie set that appeals to your sense of adventure and style.

Hourglass

Teddies, chemises You've got it, so flaunt it! Form-fitting teddies and chemises do a good job of flattering the hourglass figure

Corsets You can make the most of your shape by wearing beautiful corsets that help keep everything in place and accentuate your curves even further. You'll want to wear classic styles and retro looks, such as you would find in a pin up magazine from the middle of the twentieth century - these styles, which have been designed with curvaceous women in mind, will look absolutely divine on you. Experiment with your clothing, and don't be afraid to try new things!

Tips for All Types

Hosiery The best tip for everyone is this: Don't forget to accentuate your legs! Wearing a great pair of stockings, along with sexy shoes to match, is by far the best way to complete your look any time and make your legs look longer, slimmer, and sexier.

Sexy Shoes Wearing a pair of heels with long pants gives you a more streamlined look, and wearing a pair of platform boots or shoes will give you a boost that will help you look your best.

Lingerie Accessories Remember to accessorize! Draw more attention to your bust and face by wearing sparkly jewelry (it doesn't have to be expensive!) and a sexy pair of gloves is always a great addition.

No matter what your shape, you can enjoy an even sexier look by paying attention to your posture, taking great care of your skin, and showing off plenty of it! You really can enjoy a sexy, glamorous look - any day of the week. So, put these tips to use, and watch your sex appeal - as well as your own confidence - skyrocket!
